With the pandemic not slowing down in the U.S., there is a very good chance that most theaters will remain closed even halfway through 2021. And one of the films slotted for a May release in 2021 is the Warner Bros. Pictures distributed ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’. This film marks the 4th entry to Legendary Entertainment’s “MonsterVerse”, following the previous ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’, ‘Kong: Skull Island’ and ‘Godzilla’. That means the “OTT Sharks” have smelt the metaphorical blood and are circling around the project.
Just a week ago, Warner Bros. confirmed that ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ will get a special Christmas release on HBO Max (for free to subscribers), in limited theaters in the U.S. and in theaters around the world. Warner Bros. (who owns 25 percent of the movie) reportedly still wants a theatrical release, just as scheduled, but they have received a huge offer from Netflix for the streaming rights.
Netflix has placed a humongous offer of USD 200 million on the table to take the film directly to the streaming platform. WarnerMedia has apparently blocked this deal while preparing a simultaneous offer of its own for its own OTT platform, HBO Max. Legendary has declined to comment on this matter for now.
With the pandemic continuing to hit the American public hard, there is very less chance for most of the U.S. theaters to be fully back in business. Legendary has a huge budgeted blockbuster in their hands, and with the release date slowly looming closer and closer, we are sure that the offer from the streaming service companies will only get more attractive.
‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is directed by Adam Wingard, who directed Bloody Disgusting’s A Horrible Way to Die. The movie will star Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Kyle Chandler in prominent roles. The film will feature two of the biggest icons in monster history – King Kong and Godzilla who will face each other in a “monster brawl for the ages”.
